Signs Your AC Is Breaking Down as the Temps Heat Up

When you’re expecting a hot summer, having a working air conditioner is likely high on your priority list. That’s why you need to keep an eye out for these signs that your AC is experiencing problems and may break down soon.

Weak Airflow

If your AC is not pushing out the amount of air that it used to, that is a significant red flag. This could indicate issues with your filter, ductwork, refrigerant, compressor or motor. Regardless, your appliance is likely being overworked.

Note that if you have a multi-room AC system, you may have poor airflow in some areas but not others. In that case, ductwork issues are the likely culprit.

Warm Output

Of course, the purpose behind an AC is to keep you cool. If it’s blowing warm air, you need to know why.

First, check your thermostat settings. If they are correct, this issue may point to a compression failure or refrigerant leak.

Noisy AC

ACs should normally be quiet and definitely should not be making grinding, squealing or banging noises. The latter situation can result from problems with your belts, bearings or motor.

AC That’s Slow to Start

Depending on your air conditioner, it should only take a few seconds to start working following a thermostat adjustment. If takes a few minutes instead, particularly if it used to be much quicker, that is a strong indicator that it may not last the summer without breaking down.

Excess Water

It is normal for your AC to cause some condensation. However, be on the lookout for an excessive amount of moisture compared to what is usual for your unit.

You need to address puddles and active leaks immediately. Potential causes of this much excess moisture include clogged drains and refrigerant leaks.

Smelly AC

There is surely an issue with your AC if it smells bad. In some cases, this might be related to excess moisture that is causing mold to grow. Conversely, if your AC is overheating, possibly due to an electrical issue, you may notice a burning smell instead. If the appliance smells sweet, the issue could be a refrigerant leak.

Old AC

Even if your AC is not showing any of these other potential indicators of damage, its age alone is a warning sign. If you have had your air conditioner for more than 10 years, have it inspected or replaced so that you can enjoy this hot summer in comfort.
